Exponential rise in the number of A & E admissions for mental health related issues
Figures obtained through Freedom of Information requests to NHS A & E departments across the UK, highlights an exponential rise over the past few years in the numbers of both adults and children being seen for mental health related reasons. The largest increase was in England, where two thirds of the Trusts surveyed reported an increase.
Although a Department of Health spokesperson said the government is investing £247m by 2021 for mental health support in hospital emergency departments, the current demands placed on front line hospital staff is unprecedented. The complexity and multi-agency support required by patients with mental health support needs means tailored crisis management and recovery pathway services are in high demand.

Our support service has proved to be a lifeline on many occasions to health care providers in the South of England, including an NHS Trust in the South-West.
From the initial critical period where the behaviours and anxieties of the person requiring support can rapidly escalate and where the person can pose a risk to themselves and to others, through to providing continuity of support, where we are able to tailor the care and support we provide to meet changing needs and environments, build a rapport with the individual and provide them with familiar friendly faces, our clinicians and support team thrive on making a difference.
